History
Louis XI wanted a fortress built here both to defend Beaune and to keep a watch on its inhabitants, who had shown themselves faithful to Marie, the daughter of Charles The Bold. Its construction began in 1482 and ended in 1527.
At the request of Beaune’s inhabitants, it was demolished and partially razed during the reign of Henri IV. The famous engraver Lallemand was captivated by its ruins and produced a very romantic picture of them.
The chateau remained a Royal Domain until the French Revolution, when it was sold as a Property of the State to the Morelot-Bouchard family, who saw the advantages of installing wine cellars in the chateau.
Today it houses the prestigious vintages of Maison Bouchard Père & Fils.
